It's hard to believe Belgium's 'prime' newspaper De Standaard still claims to bring objective and balanced news.
Today's main article on foreign policy matters dealt with Kim Jong Un's visit to the PRC:
"Kim Jong Un actually promises a Spring full of 'joy and hope', and as such claims a normal diplomatic role. However, the American hardliner John Bolton could spoil things.
THE DEBUT OF STATESMAN KIM."
It really stands there.
Really.
"THE DEBUT OF STATESMAN KIM".
In North Korea's 'Arduous March', the period between 1994 and 1998, enormous swaths of the population suffered from famine. Certainly, devastating floods, and later extreme drought, contributed to the disaster. But the main culprit was first and foremost the Stalinist country's economic mismanagement. Estimates as to the number of those perishing from starvation vary wildly and run from about a quarter of a million to 3.5 million. The latter number is possibly a fabrication of the regime itself to spur the international community to come to their aid, but 2 million deaths is, tragically, an entirely possible death toll.
The regime today is not one iota better than twenty years ago, one might even argue au contraire, much worse, what with the nuclear threat now casting long shadows beyond NK's borders. A threat enabled by the then US government under Bill Clinton.
Let all that be no problem for our moral betters at De Standaard!!! Kim Jong Un, petty tyrant, murderer, hedonist, and cruel son of a bitch is a 'Statesman'. And John Bolton, bah, that's a 'hardliner'!
One of the many symptoms of one of many European pathologies on full display. God help us with a press corps like that.
MFBB.
