They are from Teignmouth in Devon, which is just a short distance up north from Torquay.

Her surname is a composite, with "de" borrowed from her Dutch mother's name "De Groot" and "Paul" being her father's middle name. 1972 was the year of the Munich Massacre, and someone whispered in her name that it was safer not to have a Jewish name - she was born a Rubin.
