First, Georg Friedrich Händel with the wonderful Sarabande.



I've written on these pages before that I am quite fond of baroque music. That's why Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 – 1759), a monumental German Baroque composer, famous for his operas, anthems, organ concertos and oratorios. After 'honing his craft' in Halle, Hamburg and Italy he settled in London in 1712 and effectively became British by naturalization in 1727 (and changed his name to George Frideric Handel). He could count Queen Anne among his patrons. By the time he died he had composed over forty operas.

Haendel's Sarabande is, as its name implies, a dance, and one in triple metre. In a sarabande measure the second and third beats are often tied, typically giving the dance a rhythm of alternating quarter notes and eighth notes (more or less symbolizing a 'real' dance's dragging steps). Check it out, it's quite obvious. This particular sarabande, from Haendel's Cembalo-Suite nr. 4 in d-moll (HWV 437, for Haendel Werke Verzeichnis 437) was used several times in a movie score - most famously of course in Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece Barry Lyndon (with Ryan O'Neal as the protagonist).

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (Russian: Дмитрий Дмитриевич Шостакович; 1906 – 1975) was a monumental Soviet Russian composer and pianist who more or less came unscathed through the hell that was the USSR - and this despite his being friends with Mikhail Tuchachevsky, Trotsky's famous Chief of Staff who was executed in 1937 during Stalin's purges. He was influenced by Stravinsky and Mahler. His orchestral repertoire encompasses amongst others 15 symphonies and six concerti, but apart from that there's also a very substantial oeuvre in chamber and piano music, operas and film scores. This particular piece 'Romance' (Shostakovich' Opus 97) was used in the 1955 Soviet movie drama The Gadfly, directed by Aleksandr Faintsimmer and based on the 1897 novel by Ethel Lilian Voynich (of Irish stock and the daughter of the famous mathematician George Boole).

At the same time the many muslim politicians already active in their parties are treated like the Epitome of Democracy, while these people keep jetting to their countries of origin and back, where non-muslims suffer REAL daily abuse and REAL discrimination, apart from the humiliation of being second rank citizens. Politicians like Yuksel and Almaci KNOW FULL WELL, when visiting their political-religious confrères or even just family in Turkey or Morocco or whatever, that the pitiful remnants of christians there cannot even renovate their decrepit little churches, that what few monasteries are left are robbed of their grounds, that the dwindling christian clergy is imprisoned or at best fined when there's even a suspicion of proselytizing, that trials are grossly unfair for each and every non-muslim....

.... and yet Yuksel, Almaci, Korkmazer, Koçak and Co. arrive back again in Belgistan on the tarmac of Zaventem or Charleroi with broad smiles and are happy and eager to lambast those pesky Vlaams Belang nazis and racists for ... Imagine my surprise when I read early this week that The Guardian ran a series on the popular music scene of your truly's Fatherland titled Sounds of Belgium. This link's list defines Belgian pop, according to Guardian editor Andrew Khan.

Our local leftist rag was quick to notice The Graudian's interest, and even quicker to come up with a 'typical' Belgian list of its own.

Any sensible person knows that whatever The Guardian writes is sheer and utter crap, and it ain't no different this time. The same goes for De Standaard, Home of Brainwashed White Selhating Junkies and Fossilized May 68 Leftovers. But why should we be surprised at their show of appalling ignorance and bad taste (the nod to Jacques Brel notwithstanding) when both commie outlets have made an olympic sport of spouting nonsense, outright lies and irrelevant trivia.

There now follows a list by Outlaw Mike of what constitutes Belgian Popular Music, and in my not so humble opinion I think that if a decent marketing machine had stood behind some of them, those might have gotten a truly fair amount of positive attention beyond the borders of La Belgique.

SATURDAY NIGHT LOU REED, JOE JACKSON.

Reed wrote it in 1972 and it appeared on his Transformer album, released in November of the same year. I got to know it around ten years later, courtesy my good friend John D. During the eighties, I forgot its title (!)  and, it being the pre-Internet age and me having other stuff on my mind, it faded more and more from my radar. Sometime during the nineties however it was part of the soundtrack of the movie Trainspotting, and Perfect Day made a perfect comeback. It's been in my personal Top 2,000 ever since.

While I learned of this album later on, I got to know Joe Jackson also through John D., who influenced my musical taste heavily in the early eighties. As a matter of fact, he made me worldwise in rock 'n roll. Before that, both taste and knowledge about cool music were, how to put it... piss-poor. Right, that's the correct expression. Piss-poor. Over at National Review Online, Kathryn Jean Lopez interviews John R. Lott Jr, co-author (with, admitted, Grover Norquist) of the book Debacle: Obama’s War on Jobs and Growth and What We Can Do Now to Regain Our Future.

"...LOPEZ: “Debacle” — isn’t that a wee bit of an exaggeration?

LOTT: This recovery has been the equivalent of a “dead-cat bounce.” Thirty-five months into the recovery and the unemployment rate is still above 8 percent. But what is worse, the drop in unemployment has largely been from people giving up looking for work and leaving the labor force. People can stop being counted as unemployed either because they get a job or because they give up looking for work. Unfortunately, while 1.9 million jobs have been added during the recovery, 7.7 million more Americans are now classified as “not in the labor force.”

But are Obama’s policies responsible? That is the main issue of our book. We provide a lot of evidence on this, but compare Canada and the United States. Canadian and U.S. unemployment rates increased in lockstep from August 2008 until six months later, in February 2009, when the stimulus was passed in the United States. During those six months, the U.S. unemployment rate rose by 2.1 percentage points, from 6.1 percent to 8.2 percent, the Canadian by 1.9 percentage points, from 5.1 percent to 7 percent (using the Bureau of Labor Statistics measure to make the Canadian measure of unemployment comparable with the U.S. rate).



The graph that we have showing how much worse our economy performed after that is striking. Right after the U.S. enacted the $825 billion stimulus, the unemployment rates quickly diverged. While the U.S. unemployment rate soared, the Canadian unemployment rate leveled off and then began to fall. By contrast, today, our rate has not returned to what it was when Obama became president.

This didn’t have to be. Government doesn’t just create new spending. The money has to come from someplace. When you move spending from where you or I or companies would have spent their money to where the government thinks that the money should go, you not only move around these resources, you move around the jobs associated with them. The problem is that people don’t instantly move from one job to another. That chaos created by the stimulus temporarily increases unemployment.

Not only has the stimulus made the economy worse, it has left us with a huge debt. The publicly held U.S. federal debt was $3.4 trillion by the end of 2000, shortly before George W. Bush became president, and by the end of his tenure eight years later, it had risen to $5.8 trillion. Publicly held debt excludes the money that the government owes to itself. Today, the publicly held debt has reached about $11 trillion. Obama has almost succeeded in doubling it during just three years. For a family of four, that means their share of the federal debt went from $87,000 to $140,000. If Obama remains president for a second term, assuming no new pet projects or other changes, Obama’s own projections from this year’s budget predict that each family’s share of the debt will reach a whopping $186,000 by October 2016."
