CHURCHILL WOULD NOD.

Winston Churchill once famously said: "The best argument against democracy is a five minutes conversation with the average voter."

Indeed.

Mind you, I don't think the picture is that different on the Republican side. It's just that apparently the clueless people on the left far outnumbered their counterparts on the right. Being somewhat of a political junkie myself, upon seeing this video I had a sense of déjà vu. Basically it's the same over here, with people being completely unable to answer even the simplest questions. They may know the Prime Minister but once you start asking what exactly the difference between executive and legislative power is, you get blank stares most if not all of the time. As society evolves and becomes more complex, as the whole world in all its facets, from the technology that surrounds us to the legislation that governs our life to the infrastructure that is being raised around us... becomes more complex.... isn't it appropriate that people should at least be able to present a basic understanding of how the political system works, the issues politicians stand for, and the way their votes can make a difference? Years ago I toyed with the idea that in order to be able to cast a vote, people should first be required to submit a test consisting of a limited set of questions proving that at least they understand what is at stake. I don't think such a test would be undemocratic. It's not undemocratic that you are required to have a driver's license before you are allowed on the street in a vehicle weighing a ton and capable of reaching 130 miles an hour. Not requiring a license would lead to a plethora of grave accidents and great loss of life.

Likewise, letting clueless people decide the fate of a nation - people who cast a vote based on a fluffy warm feeling rather than on solid, rational, verifiable facts - strikes me as an act of folly just as crazy, only of a millionfold magnitude. Hey, like I said, society evolves. Why shouldn't the electoral process? Why shouldn't tests be in order?

ISLAMIC CANCER EATING AWAY INDIA.

For a vast country and emerging superpower as India, it sure gets little attention. I was reminded of that upon reading the entry "The muslim insurgency in India" in today's Gates of Vienna. Baron Bodissey has some astute remarks:

timesmt
"India is the single largest theater of conflict in the Counterjihad. There are about 140 million Muslims in India — roughly equivalent to half the population of Western Europe — and they comprise more than 13% of the nation’s population. Since the Partition of 1947, which separated India from Pakistan (and what is now Bangladesh), the percentage of Muslims in India has increased significantly, while the Hindus and Sikhs of Bangladesh and Pakistan have all but disappeared.

India is subjected to frequent and horrendous terrorist attacks committed by Muslim extremists. If the amount of death and suffering caused by the average Muslim terrorist attack in India were experienced in the West, it would be a crisis of unprecedented magnitude. But such things happen in India all the time.

According to the few contacts I have in India, the political culture on the subcontinent is as much in thrall to the madness of political correctness as is the United States or Europe. Well-meaning people want to believe that Muslims in India are just like anybody else, and that any problems with them are due to a lack of understanding or a failure of outreach."

For those offended by the provocative title of this post, read again the first paragraph of the Baron's post. Indeed, despite the fact in 1947 vast migrations took place between what was then West and East Pakistan and India - muslims moving from India to the Pakistans and Hindus into the opposite direction - large numbers of muslims and hindus remained in both countries (it should be recalled that in 1971 East Pakistan became Bangladesh). And yet, sixty years later, both Pakistan and Bangladesh are practically Hindu-free (or shall we say Hindurein), while in India, majority Hindu to begin with, tens of millions of muslims have apparently, if not thrived, then at least lived good enough to prefer to continue live in the world's largest democracy.

It is precisely this observation, which for some reason until now eluded me, that caused me to put the above title in place instead of the more politically correct "Islamic extremism eating away India".

Why is that in EVERY country where a large muslim body becomes majority, the tipping point heralds an accelerated religious cleansing of non-muslim minorities thereafter?

India's The Sunday Pioneer has a compelling article, by Chandan Mitra:

"It's 63 and counting. That's the number of bomb blasts that have happened in India over the last six months. This works out to an average of one every three days! Of course, blasts usually don't happen singly. Most of the time, they are serial in nature for jihadis have perfected the art of creating a cascade of terror, be it in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi or Guwahati.

The Government will not admit this, but the jihadis have succeeded in their diabolical aim of creating an atmosphere of insecurity and fear across the country. No city, no State is immune to this. Even if explosions haven't happened in Kerala yet, it doesn't mean that terror merchants don't have the State on their radar.

...

The terrorists' strategy is two-pronged. First, they wish to destabilise the economy and cripple visible symbols of India's success -- the Bombay Stock Exchange building, Indian Institute of Science and offices of IT giants in Bangalore, to name just two. Alongside, they seek to knock the bottom out of Narendra Modi's Vibrant Gujarat, paralyse Rajasthan's tourism-driven economy, and spread panic through Delhi since events in the national Capital have a multiplier effect on publicity.

Their second, but parallel, strategy is to create pockets of Muslim dominance to serve as recruiting grounds through exploitation of the community's perceived sense of victimhood. That explains the concerted manner in which liberal and "secular" opinion was mobilised in defence of the Batla House terrorists in Delhi and the selective targeting of Bodo people in the Assam blasts -- a transparent bid to coerce indigenous populations of the North-Eastern States into submission...."

I'm sorry to spoil the happy multiculti dreams of a bunch of naives out there, but as time goes by, the evidence becomes undeniable. Islam is Cancer.

UPCOMING: VALKYRIE.

Here's one movie you don't want to miss. Even if you're not a World War Two nutjob like me.

Numerous attempts took place to assassinating Adolf Hitler. None came as close as the one staged by Count Colonel Klaus Schenk Von Stauffenberg on July 20, 1944. The fascinating story of that long ago endeavour was just begging to be filmed. Say about Tom Cruise what you will, but over the years I have grudglingly come to respect him as an actor. There was a time in my student's years when he did not seem all that indistinguishable from the Brat Pack, you know, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Rob Lowe, Matthew Broderick etc etc. After all these years, there's basically only one still standing - and standing tall: Cruise. I'm sure there are other great actors out there able to play the charismatic Colonel - I think Clive Owen might have pulled off a good job too - but with Cruise I'm sure it's going to be a failsafe shot. The time for release seems incongruous - near year's end and Christmas. But then this is a timeless story. Don't miss it.

DESMOND TUTU IS A SCHTOOPID FOOKING IDIOT.

Some exerpts from an November WaPo article by South Africa's mentally/dentally challenged Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the occasion of Obama's victory:

desmondtutu
When war began, first in Afghanistan and not long after in Iraq, we read allegations of prisoner abuse at Bagram air base in Afghanistan and of rendition to countries notorious for practicing torture. We saw the horrific images from Abu Ghraib and learned of gruesome acts performed in the name of gathering information. Sometimes the torture itself was couched in the government's euphemisms -- calling waterboarding an "interrogation technique."... To the outgoing administration's record on torture we must add a string of other policies that have damaged the standing of the United States in the world: its hostility to the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gases; its refusal to assent to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, establishing the ICC's role in prosecuting war crimes; its restrictions on the use of U.S. funding to fight AIDS; and the arrogant unilateralism it has employed in declaring to be enemies any countries it deemed "against us" because they were not "for us."

Oh yeah f*cking *sshole? Sorry you blistering old fool. The war did not begin in Afghanistan nor in Iraq. It began in New York, on 9/11. May I also draw your attention to the fact that your revered Kyoto Protocol is a sham and that over the period 1990-2004 greenshouse gas emission by China and India - signatories to the Protocol - actually rose by 47 and 55% respectively (compared to the US's 15.8%)? As for "the horrific images from Abu Ghraib", how about this?

plaasmoorde

One of the 1,600 murder victims, the overwhelming majority of them white, in over 10,700 attacks by blacks on white-owned South African farms since 1994. Now, one has to be very cautious by suggesting a link between these horrible murders (plaasmoorde in Afrikaans) and the ANC-dominated government, but it is a fact that the sheer brutality aimed specifically at white farmers is starkly reminiscent of the Zimbabwean example whereby the government, with disastrous results, deliberately let loose gangs of thugs on its white farmers as part of its "land reform programme". The official aim of the SA government is to transfer one third of white-owned farmland to black farmers by 2014. The friendly ties between the Zimbabwean and South African governments are well known, and the ANC has always been a hotbed of radical murderous terrorists. Isn't it entirely plausible that radical ANC elements in the SA government, with the silent approval of the "decent" cadres, have been simply applying Mugabes tactics to scare and chase away the Boers in order to facilitate South African "redistribution"? A telling ANC slogan was "Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer" by Peter Mokaba, an ANC youth leader later turned Deputy Minister for Environmentalism and Tourism (he was also an AIDS denialist, ironically he died a couple of years back from that same disease). And then there is of course the example set by that old commie hag of a Nelson Mandela himself, caught here on tape advocating the murder of whites:

There's a gigantic body of evidence there hinting very strongly at involvement of ANC elements and even South African Police in the "plaasmoorde". Tutu must be aware of this.

But even the scandalous dismissal of the horrible murders on white farmers as random acts of murder by the SA government and important black personages like Tutu is trumped by the sheer negligence and denial with which that government treats the country's greatest peril: the AIDS endemic. Here are some conservative (?) estimates on the prevalence of HIV in the New South Africa:

National estimates based on all surveys

Based on a wide range of data, including the household and antenatal studies, UNAIDS/WHO in July 2008 published an estimate of 18.1% prevalence in those aged 15-49 years old at the end of 2007. Their high and low estimates are 15.4% and 20.9% respectively. According to their own estimate of total population (which is another contentious issue), this implies that around 5.7 million South Africans were living with HIV at the end of 2007, including 280,000 children under 15 years old.

The ASSA2003 model produces a similar estimate of 5.4 million people living with HIV in mid-2006, or around 11% of the total population. It predicts that the number will exceed 6 million by 2015, by which time around 5.4 million South Africans will have died of AIDS.

Of course, the picture is no different in the rest of black Africa, but South Africa presents an especially grave case, even more so in light of the position of relative prosperity vis-à-vis other African countries that white rule has given the nation. But of course, what can you expect if for years on end ANC thugs can produce no one better than a Manto Tshabalala-Msimang for Health Minister, whose recipe in 2006 against AIDS was... eating garlic and beetroot. It took the departure of Thabo Mbeki as SA President for Tshabalala-Msimang to disappear from the scene... in September 2008.

Along the way of Africa's plight something happened though, in 2003. That was the year PEPFAR was launched. PEPFAR stands for the "President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief" and involved a $15 billion commitment over five years (2003–2008) from President Bush to fight the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, with an almost exclusive focus on African countries. PEPFAR initially aimed to give antiretroviral treatment (ART) to 2 million HIV-infected people in the worst affected areas, to prevent 7 million new cases, and to provide care for 10 million people (the "2-7-10 goals") by 2010. PEPFAR was a very effective initiative, increasing the number of Africans receiving ART from 50,000 in 2003 to 1.1 million by March 2007 and an estimated 1.4 million by early 2008, at about the time that Michelle Obama deemed this accomplishment as yet another US feat she, as a African American, could not be proud of. Even though 1.4 million is still small compared to the roughly 33 million HIV/AIDS sufferers worldwide, it's not exaggerated to state that PEPFAR is one of the most successful medical/humanitarian programs of the past decades.

anti_retroviral

Actually, by early 2008 he money spent was rather 18 billion dollars, 3 billion up from the original goal of 15. But you wouldn't know that from the MSM. Nor would you know from them that, as PEPFAR I expired earlier this year, President Bush had a PEPFAR II in the scaffolds:

pepfar(HealthNewsDigest.com) - WASHINGTON - AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), hailed President Bush for signing legislation to re-authorize PEPFAR (the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief). The measure, which was signed in a formal signing ceremony earlier today in Washington, increases funding for the successful global AIDS program from $15 billion up to $48 billion over the next five years. As a result, PEPFAR, which is likely to be among the President’s most successful and lasting legacies, will save five to seven million lives over the next five years.

“Passage of this historic legislation is a crucial turning point in the battle to control AIDS around the world,” said Michael Weinstein, President, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which provides medical care and services to more than 79,000 individuals in 20 countries worldwide. ”Over the past several months, AHF worked diligently to persuade legislators to restore PEPFAR’s priority on treatment. We take our hats off to everyone who helped ensure that this lifesaving global AIDS bill became a reality.”

It was all to no avail.

On November 9, 2008, Desmond Tutu was allowed to write in the Washington Post:

Today Africans walk taller than they did a week ago -- just as they did when Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994. Not only Africans, but people everywhere who have been the victims of discrimination at the hands of white Westerners, have a new pride in who they are. If a dark-skinned person can become the leader of the world's most powerful nation, what is to stop children everywhere from aiming for the stars? The fact that Obama's Kenyan grandfather was a convert to Islam may -- shamefully -- have been controversial in parts of the United States, but elsewhere in the world, Obama's multi-faith heritage is an inspiration.

And the president-elect has one additional key quality: He is not George W. Bush.

Someone tell this... f*cking fool, asshat superdeluxe, ignorant dimwit, overrated fourteenth rank "bishop", blistering idiot with long overdue porridge for brains... THAT IF MILLIONS OF AFRICANS ARE TODAY WALKING TALLER THAN THEY DID FIVE YEARS AGO... IT IS BECAUSE OF GEORGE W. BUSH!!!

SUNDAY BEAUTIES.

Every week on Sunday our own personal Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann has a "Sunday Funnies" up. I hope he's not offended by me calling him sgt, btw. Personally, I think the CDR is a Rear Admiral or something, or at least the skipper of a nukular carrier. Anyway, I figured we should do something similar since, hey, we can't rail against the socialization of the US or the f*cking islamization of Europe all the time. In vain looking for something worth repeating every seventh day, and alas being a rather humorless and dour character myself, I quickly bumped against the limitations of my sphere of interests. So here it is, I will have to confine myself to this topic. I'm sure you'll all heartbroken.

OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ELECT TURNS DOWN MFBB APPLICATION.

To counter the rising unemployment numbers, the Prez-Elect has announced a dramatic increase in the size of the gubbermint. The number of people in public service has to be doubled. Qualified people are sought. Feeling qualified myself, I filled in the form and submitted it. I am of course no American but since Obami himself is Kenyan I didn't think that would be a problem. I received an email from Bernardine Dohrn, newly appointed US Labor Secretary albeit with execution experience, with the following questionnaire attached.

That did not go too well. For instance:

In April 2004, I sent an email to a friend of mine in which I described how utterly ridiculous I had received the speech of some upstart fella from the City of Dope or something. I flunked 13.

THE TREATMENT OF BUSH HAS BEEN A DISGRACE.

I am 43 years old and have been a keen follower of US and world politics since I was 16. I have never, never, witnessed the avalanche of dirt, lies, insults, vomit, ridicule and sheer hatred heaped upon George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States, during his eight year long tenure.

George W. Bush inherited a recession and was thrown the gauntlet by islamic terrorists who had been let loose under his predecessor. In the wake of the compounding economic crisis he managed to liberate two countries and fifty million people and install democracies there, kept the homeland free from further terrorist attacks, and managed, through his tax cuts, to turn the tide of mounting budget deficits by 2004. En passant he profiled himself as the savior of Africa's tens of millions AIDS victims. Never one to appease the electorate or the elites, he took bold decision upon bold decision. Six months before his second term expired, the last timebomb from the Clinton era exploded in his face, and again he dealt with this crisis as best as he could, and seemed to be turning things around by November 3.

Adolf Hitler destroyed empires and kingdoms, states and entire peoples. Because he lived, an estimated 60 million died, very often in atrocious and appalling circumstances. Many millions more were wounded, maimed or psychologically ruined. Infrastructure was devastated on an unseen scale, financial systems broke down completely, and the entire world power balance was changed. Humanity was left with the shocking realization that there are no limits to its cruelty.

But not even Adolf Hitler ever received so much scorn as George Bush.

What is wrong with us? The WSJ's Jeffrey Scott Shapiro does not have the answer. But at least he asks the question.

It's about time.

THE TREATMENT OF BUSH HAS BEEN A DISGRACE

What must our enemies be thinking?
By Jeffrey Scott Shapiro

Earlier this year, 12,000 people in San Francisco signed a petition in support of a proposition on a local ballot to rename an Oceanside sewage plant after George W. Bush. The proposition is only one example of the classless disrespect many Americans have shown the president.

According to recent Gallup polls, the president's average approval rating is below 30% -- down from his 90% approval in the wake of 9/11. Mr. Bush has endured relentless attacks from the left while facing abandonment from the right.

This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans. During his 2004 victory speech, the president reached out to voters who supported his opponent, John Kerry, and said, "Today, I want to speak to every person who voted for my opponent. To make this nation stronger and better, I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust."

Those bipartisan efforts have been met with crushing resistance from both political parties.

The president's original Supreme Court choice of Harriet Miers alarmed Republicans, while his final nomination of Samuel Alito angered Democrats. His solutions to reform the immigration system alienated traditional conservatives, while his refusal to retreat in Iraq has enraged liberals who have unrealistic expectations about the challenges we face there.

It seems that no matter what Mr. Bush does, he is blamed for everything. He remains despised by the left while continuously disappointing the right.

Yet it should seem obvious that many of our country's current problems either existed long before Mr. Bush ever came to office, or are beyond his control. Perhaps if Americans stopped being so divisive, and congressional leaders came together to work with the president on some of these problems, he would actually have had a fighting chance of solving them.

....

Just as Americans have gained perspective on how challenging Truman's presidency was in the wake of World War II, our country will recognize the hardship President Bush faced these past eight years -- and how extraordinary it was that he accomplished what he did in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. He never lost faith in America or her people, and has tried his hardest to continue leading our nation during a very difficult time.

Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. It has shown to the world how disloyal we can be when our president needed loyalty -- a shameful display of arrogance and weakness that will haunt this nation long after Mr. Bush has left the White House
.

DEBUNKING CHARLES JOHNSON BECOMES A SPORT.

Yawn.

Saint Charles Johnson again. For the umpteenth time LGF's Charles Johnson has found the definitive evidence that the Vlaams Belang, the party I am a member of, is a Nazi party and is therefore to be avoided by those who oppose the creeping islamization of the West. To tell you the truth, I am getting so B-O-R-E-D with constantly having to defend myself and my party against these ridiculous accusations, that I didn't feel like rebuking this drivel again. I have done so in the past, here, here, and here, and then I even forget some. But after having been questioned by longtime acquaintance Mr. Ghost, I realized there's still far too many people out there hearing but one side of the story. So here goes - please bear with me.

The Vlaams Belang is not a nazi party. It has murky origins though, but has gone through a lengthy process of cleansing. It is sad and ironic that the very person responsible for that cleansing process, former chairman Frank Vanhecke, has currently been stripped of his immunity as MEP for an idiotic fact he did not commit himself, nor was even aware of. Point is, anno 2008 the (pro-US) VB is clean, or at least clean enough, and given its programme encompassing supply side economics, strong ethically conservative stances, and opposition to limitless immigration, it is very probably Europe's closest equivalent to the GOP. That is not to say there are no unsavoury characters left in the VB... but you will find those in any party. And when these people reveal themselves in an unguarded moment, they are ousted.

So let's now take a look at the latest LGF allegations. From the website of Our Holy Trinity of Ignorance, Arrogance, and Obsession:

Vlaams Belang Head at Nazi Book Fair - Update: VB Event at Neo-Nazi Pub
World Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 3:01:19 pm PST

Here’s a video showing Vlaams Belang leader Filip DeWinter, shopping for books at a VB/Voorpost convention. The books on these tables: neo-Nazi and fascist literature, and books about Voorpost—a European tribal nationalist militia with an openly fascist ideology.

Featuring salesmen wearing Nazi-style visored caps.

First off, those "Nazi style visor caps" are a rather common student accessory in Europe. I was not surprised to find a photo of them in a book dealing with the FarOer Islands, halfway Scotland and Iceland. Of course, Saint Johnson may claim that the FarOer Islands are one of those places where Martin Bormann and Co. fled to after Berlin fell in 45. But take a closer look as we proceed through the video. At some point Filip Dewinter - who, btw, is not the VB's Chairman but its fraction leader in Flemish Parliament - picks up a "Nazi" book and quickly fumbles through its pages here and there. He stops at the following page:

lgf_evidence1

severenThe guy you see on that photo is Joris Van Severen, who in Flemish nationalist circles is a revered hero. During the interbellum, Van Severen, a World War I veteran who became disillusioned with the Belgian state for the often harsh treatment of Flemish conscripts under Walloon officers, founded the Verdinaso, or Verbond van Dietsche Nationaal Solidaristen. This Flemish nationalist movement advocated corporatism, strong catholicism and the unification of The Netherlands with Flanders, a geographic entity they called Dietsland. For those people who thanks to Johnson's constant barrage of accusations think I'm making this up, I refer to the Wikipedia entry. Take especially notice of this exerpt:

Joris Van Severen ideological thinking was also influenced by Charles Maurras and Maurice Barrès, whilst failing to come to any accommodation with the Rexists or the Flemish National Union. Van Severen was equally opposed to Adolf Hitler and on the outbreak of World War II he banned his followers from producing any material in support of Nazism...

... When Germany began executing Fall Gelb (the invasion of the Low Countries by Germany) in 1940 the Belgian government arrested him, together with many other Flemish-nationalist en communist politicians, and thousands of foreigners, and transported him to France for lack of space in Belgium. Van Severen belonged to a group of prisoners who was imprisoned in Abbeville, where, during havy German air attacks at May 20, he was shot with 20 other prisoners by French soldiers who thought they were dangerous spies.

It should be emphasized that Joris Van Severen, the man who despised the (then francophone) Belgian State for oppressing Flemish culture and language, exhorted his followers at the outbreak of the May 1940 invasion to take up arms for Belgium and fight the Nazi invader. As you can gather from the wikipedia entry, he was however rounded up by that same Belgian state and transported to France, where he met his untimely end at the hands of triggerhappy French soldiers who, apart from Van Severen, executed some twenty other persons suspected of espionage, an episode known as the "Bloodbath of Abbeville". Van Severen died a hero's death, as he was shot in the head and the stomach while trying to talk sense in a panicking French officer.

Okay-dokey. So much for the Obersturmbannfuehrer's biography Dewinter is so fascinated by. Now let's follow him further on his journey through the Nazi book:

lgf_evidence2

If you thought Dewinter was admiring here a photo of Nazi officers on the Eastern Front, sorry, no such luck. It's a photo of Belgian Army officers prior to the war. On the photo, you can distinguish, second from the right, the Belgian King, Leopold III. Below you find a book cover with a photo of the King, wearing the high boots he was so fond of.

leopoldIII

Sorry Charles, Leopold III may have been many things, but he was no Nazi.

So WHO THE F*CK got LGF's Grand Wizard this latest intel snafu? Johnson refers to a certain Thanos, and I thought it worthwhile to sniff a bit around on that fella's blog. Surprise surprise. I found this, RIGHT UNDER Thanos' entry regarding Filip Dewinter visiting a "Nazi Book Fair":

thanos

A-ha! I see! "Congratulations to President Elect Barack Obama." Who would have thunk it??? So now we have a Barack Obama supporter telling us that the Vlaams Belang is a nazi party! Well well well!!! Now THAT's what I call a reliable source. Not!!! Check your buddies Charles. No, seriously. You live in La La Land huh? We have a saying over here: "wie bij de hond slaapt betrapt zijn luizen". BELGIAN MINISTER OF DEFENSE TELLS SOCIALIST MP HE'S "IN THE CAMP OF OSAMA BIN LADEN AND HIS BOMBLAYER AND RAPIST FRIENDS.'

Oh the irony! At the moment the USA seems to make a sharp leftward bend, Belgium more or less emerges from the stagnation of eight years of leftist rule. A simple scene like below could never have happened even one year ago:

I don't blame nobody for not understanding Dutch/Flemish, a language spoken by, give and take, 23 million people worldwide (without counting Afrikaans). Here's what's being said in that video:

(voice of news anchor): Groen! [the Flemish greens - MFBB] and SP.a [the Flemish socialists - MFBB] doubt whether the army has the financial clout to send more troops to Afghanistan and claim that NATO is "doing things the wrong way there".

Wouter De Vriendt (MP, Flemish greens): "I think that the Leterme governmnet is making a clear ideological choice here, an idelogical choice whereby one follows the American war logic."

Dirk Van Der Maelen (MP, Flemish Socialists): "This minister, followed by this government, is dragging our country into a hopeless and illegal war in Afghanistan."

[Reply by] Pieter De Crem (Belgian Minister of Defense, Christian Democrats): "You are, Mr. Van Der Maelen, completely isolated. You find yourself in the camp of Osama Bin Laden and his friends bomblayers and rapists. You are an objective partner of the bomblayers and of those who cut off the ears of girls when they attend school."

So what we have here is a November 5, 2008 meeting in the House Committee for Defense whereby the Belgian Minister of Defense, Pieter de Crem (Christian Democrats), has to field questions by the opposition, mainly the Flemish greens (Groen!) and the Flemish socialists. De Crem is the man who, immediately upon formation of the Leterme government in Spring 2008, took the necessary steps to send at least a token contribution to the real fight in Afghanistan. While it is true that on average some 300 Belgian troops have been guarding Kabul International Airport (KAIA) since 2002 (and been doing a fairly good job of it), it is also commonly known throughout NATO that this assignment is one of the safest in the whole country. f16gbu12Apart from that, for several years now a small demining detachment is active in the north around Kunduz, embedded with German troops. While both assignments are not completely without risk it is clear that the Belgian ISAF committment is a far cry from the active involvement in combat operations by, e.g., the Dutch. The most visible change since De Crem took the helm at Defense is that since mid-September, four F-16 MLU5 fighter bombers are actively participating in CAS (Close Air Support) operations, together with Dutch and French planes, from the southern Kandahar Airport. According to the Belgian Air Force website, on average every other day the missions involve bombing and strafing of Taliban positions. As small as this contribution may be, given the political climate in Belgium this is something of a small miracle. It's not that the will to fight has left the military itself - in early September, possibly encouraged by now having a normal Secdef after eight catastrophic years under the Walloon socialist André Flahaut, Major General Testelmans, Chief of the Belgian Ground Forces, hinted that the Army could do more than humanitarian operations and even stated that Belgian troops were ready for the fight in Afghanistan's south. He, and his Minister, were immediately treated like reckless anachronistic Rambos on steroids not only by the opposition but even by some MP's from the Liberal Party. A case like this shows once again how difficult it has become to project a credible defense in European countries. Leftist and center-left politicians have evolved into actual adversaries of the military - a very dangerous development and one which is actually completely in line with their policy of weakening our states from within. In Germany, the greens objected to the sending of a mere six Tornado fighter bombers to AF on the grounds that... they would unnecessarily contribute to the greenhouse effect (I kid you not). In Spain, the socialist Minister of Defense, Carmen Chacon, has more or less vowed that she wants to strip the Spanish Armed Forces of every armed component (again, I kid you not). How else would you explain her quote: At the same time however, "pacifist" Spain is signing huge arms contracts with Chavez. Logic and leftism, the two don't go together. As for Sweden, at the time of this writing it seems that the Swedish military has been more or less castrated and would now number around... 20,000.

sniperpod

An interesting photo. Belgian groundcrew tend to an F-16 on Kandahar Airport. Clearly visible is the brand new sniper pod, the successor to the LANTIRN, offering such razorsharp images that the risk of confusing Taliban with ordinary afghans citizens is greatly reduced.

Recent data and pics of the Belgian fighter bombers in Kandahar are hard to come by, especially news of operations. I highly suspect that the MoD has ordered a complete radio silence, since, socialists being what they are, the news of a Taliban terrorist with a broken toenail as a result of a confrontation with the Belgian Air Force might provoke such spasms among our moral betters that they might get in a position to force the redeployment of our F-16's to, say, the Ursel airstrip near Bruges. So Minister De Crem is probably being just wise. Which means that, to get some idea of Belgium's very first real involvement in the WOIT after more than seven years, I have to make do with this short 2006 video, taken during the F-16's first stint in AF, during which they were limited to recce missions. Either way, the crews and ground personnel are competent, and the planes, although old, have been kept up to date. I'm pretty sure they're pulling off a good job. Better late than never. Hat tip for the video of the meeting Luc Van Braekel.

WELL FOUGHT SENATOR, GOVERNOR, GENTLEMEN!!!

It's over.

mccain_palinIraq-US-troops-1

As a European, despite what reservations I ever may have had about Senator McCain, I want to salute his courage, tenacity and decency which never once wavered during this atrocious campaign. A victory at his age would have been the crowning achievement of a lifetime in the service of the country he so passionately loves. It would only seem fair that a man who survived the Forrestal fire, a SAM the size of a telephone pole through his wing, and five years of torture in a facility that makes Abu Ghraib look like a Best Western, would finally make it President. But then, no one ever said that life was fair. Over at CDR Salamander, the CDR urges us to "also take a moment to give Sen. McCain a nod for his Shakespearian run". I think that's too modest and I would wager that rather a deep bow is in order. Kudos also to that most remarkable, still young, beautiful and hyper-American combination of career woman, symbol of motherhood and quintessential role model John chose as his running mate: Sarah Palin, the Governor of Alaska. While John McCain may now venture into quiter political alleys, I hope and suspect that of Mrs. Palin's career into US politics, we have only seen the beginning. Eternal shame and damnation for the MSM SCUM who deem a wardrobe more newsworthy than terrorist links, and who think that "to serve and protect" includes tasering a 10 year old stepson.

As for those who voted for Obama, I personally have no congratulations to offer you. Mssrs. Qaddafi, Mullah Omar, Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Morales, al-Sadr, an estimated 500 million impotent Zeropeans and the Federation of Chairmans of Socialist Parties from NORK over La Paz to Byelorussia are right now doing that in my place. Enjoy the glow. To vote for someone who could live with twenty years of God daaaaaaaaaaaaamn America sermons in his local church, sit for years on end on the boards of two "charities" with a guy whom he KNEW had MURDERED innocent American citizens, and publicly regretted there hadn't been more of them, funneled money to a PLO operative, thought it was cool to choose his friends among Marxist professors, and to top it all off married a woman who was NOT proud of the Moon Landing or bringing the Iron Curtain down, is the height of folly. I shall have zero tolerance for your fucking wir haben es nicht gewusst excuses when the elephant's bowel contents will hit the Osprey rotors because you all had an internet connection and a mouth to ask questions during the terrible ordeal of 7 years of having to watch uniforms on TV. You had the choice between victory and baloney, you chose baloney and you will get taxes. You were sooooooooooooo angry at PRESIDENT BUSH because your fucking Oprah show was interrupted now and then with flashes from the front, basically your only nuisance. By contrast, the men and women who year after year risked their lives to preserve your right to listen to that cunt, hunting down islamic terrorists who would kill you in a heartbeat if they could, voted massively not for your Golden Boy, but for his contender... and still it doesn't ring a bell. Well then, change is what you wanted, and you will get plenty of it. You just hope that at the end of it, you have some change left.

I will make an exception for those people who thought along the lines of what we call in Belgium de "kortste pijn" (shortest pain), among them our valued reader and link and content provider Mark. The sermon above is definitely not for him, nor for the others who followed the same logic. A logic which by the way is perfectly reasonable, it's just that reason sometimes cannot beat the emotional foolishness of millions.

As for the men and women who did the real fighting over the past seven years, and who happen to stumble on this blog, compared to you, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am but a (book)worm. After all, the time and effort I have put in this little blog (which is not even mine), means nothing to your sacrifices. Next to Joe Cook's testimony, the text above is but wind blowing through November woods. At the cost of more than 4,000 lives and countless more maimed bodies, you have bought National Security for your country and its citizens. Congratulations. I am humbled.

bobbywarns

The young man above is Bobby Warns. He was a US Marines Corporal. He fell in 2004 in Fallujah and left behind a pregnant wife. I hope and pray his wife and, IIRC daughter, are in good health. After 9/11, it became clear that America had been attacked by an enemy different from Nazi Germany and the USSR. It was a callous enemy who preferred to kill innocent citizens since it was incapabable of engaging US professional military. It was also an enemy who reckoned on its non-state nature for the US not hitting back, fully expecting America to look weak and disoriented and unsure how to retaliate. The enemy was gravely mistaken. America hit back hard by doing what it best does militarily, liberating other countries. In so doing, contrary to their initial intent tens of thousands of the enemy were lured to the battlefield... where they met their end. Today, the enemy which so out of the blue attacked the US on that fateful day in September 2001, is in total disarray. Alas, a heavy price was paid for it. 4,100 soldiers, among them Bobby Warns, are not among us anymore. I want to find the correct words to express my gratitude, I cannot. Maybe posting this photo and remembering people there once was this very fine young man, is the best I can do.

Let me conclude by posting a story of another man, a typical American, who fought his own fight. It is a most inspiring story. Especially at a time when half of America seems hell bent on following Obama's siren song down a path where for once, the EUSSR is ahead of the US. It is a path that ends on an economic, demographic and moral graveyard where shame for whiteness and concern over an ecological footprint, whatever that may be, has replaced the will to procreate and the hopes and virtues christianity offers for free. It is the Story of Cory Miller. Via Francis Marion:

THE STORY OF CORY MILLER, DRILLER OF WELLS.

cmillerdrilling

Mr. Obama,

Given the uproar about the simple question asked you by Joe the Plumber, and the persecution that has been heaped on him because he dared to question you, I find myself motivated to say a few things to you myself. While Joe aspires to start a business someday, I already have started not one, but 4 businesses. But first, let me introduce myself. You can call me 'Cory the well driller'. I am a 54 year old high school graduate. I didn't go to college like you, I was too ready to go 'conquer the world' when I finished high school.

25 years ago at age 29, I started my own water well drilling business at a time when the economy here in East Texas was in a tailspin from the crash of the early 80's oil boom. I didn't get any help from the government, nor did I look for any. I borrowed what I could from my sister, my uncle, and even the pawn shop and managed to scrape together a homemade drill rig and a few tools to do my first job.

My businesses did not start as the result of privilege. It is the result of my personal drive, personal ambition, self discipline, self reliance, and a determination to treat my customers fairly. From the very start my business provided one other (than myself) East Texan a full time job. I couldn't afford a backhoe the first few years (something every well drilling business had), so I and my helper had to dig the mud pits that are necessary for each and every job with hand shovels. I had to use my 10 year old, 1/2 ton pickup truck for my water tank truck (normally a job for at least a 2 ton truck).

A year and a half after I started the business, I scraped together a 20% down payment to get a modest bank loan and bought a (28 year) old, worn out, slightly bigger drilling rig to allow me to drill deeper water wells in my area. I spent the next few years drilling wells with the rig while simultaneously rebuilding it between jobs. Through these years I never knew from one month to the next if I would have any work or be able to pay the bills. I got behind on my income taxes one year, and spent the next two years paying that back (with penalty and interest) while keeping up with ongoing taxes. I got behind on my water well supply bill 2 different years (way behind the second time... $80,000.00), and spent over a year paying it back (each time) while continuing to pay for ongoing supplies C.O.D.. Of course, the personal stress endured through these experiences and years is hard to measure. I do have a stent in my heart now to memorialize it all.

I spent the next 10 years developing the reputation for being the most competent and most honest water well driller in East Texas. 2 years along the way, I hired another full time employee for the drilling business so that we could provide full time water well pump service as well as the well drilling. Also, 3 years along the path, I bought a water well screen service machine from a friend, starting business # 2. 5 years later I made a business loan for $100,000.00 to build a new, higher production, computer controlled screen service machine. I had designed the machine myself, and it didn't work out for 3 years so I had to make the loan payments without the benefit of any added income from the new machine. No government program was there to help me with the payments, nor to help me sleep at night as I lay awake wondering how I would solve my machine problems or pay my bills. Finally, after 3 years, I got the screen machine working properly, and that provided another full time job for an East Texan in the screen service business.

2 years after that, I made another business loan, this time for $250,000.00, to buy another used drilling rig and all the support equipment needed to run another, larger, drill rig. This provided another 2 full time jobs for East Texans. Again, I spent a couple of years not knowing if I had made a smart move, or a move that would bankrupt me. For the third time in 13 years, I had placed everything I owned on the line, risking everything, in order to build a business.

A couple of years into this, I came up with a bright idea for a new kind of mud pump, a fundamentally necessary pump used on water well drill rigs. I spent my entire life savings to date (just $30,000.00), building a prototype of the pump and took it to the national water well convention to show it off. Customers immediately started coming out of the woodworks to buy the pumps, but there was a problem. I had depleted my assets making the prototype, and nobody would make me a business loan to start production of the new pumps. With several deposits for pump orders in hand, and nowhere to go, I finally started applying for as many credit cards as I could find and took cash withdrawals on these cards to the tune of over $150,000.00 (including modest loans from my dear sister and brother), to get this 3rd business going.

Yes, once again, I had everything hanging over the line in an effort to start another business. I had never manufactured anything, and I had to design and bring into production a complex hydraulic machine from an untested prototype to a reliable production model (in six months). How many nights I lay awake wondering if I had just made the paramount mistake of my life I cannot tell you, but there were plenty. I managed to get the pumps into production, which immediately created another 2 full time jobs in East Texas. Some of the models in the first year suffered from quality issues due to the poor workmanship of one of my key suppliers, so I and an employee (another East Texan employed) had to drive across the country to repair customers' pumps, practically from coast to coast. I stood behind the product, and made payments to all the credit cards that had financed me (and my brother and sister). I spent the next 5 years improving and refining the product, building a reputation for the pump and the company, working to get the pump into drill rig manufacturers' product lines, and paying back credit cards. During all this time I continued to manage a growing water well business that was now operating 3 drill rig crews, and 2 well service crews. Also, the screen service business continued to grow. No government programs were there to help me, Mr. Obama, but that's ok, I didn't expect any, nor did I want any. I was too busy fighting to make success happen to sit around waiting for the government to help me.

Now, we have been manufacturing the mud pumps for 7 years, my combined businesses employ 32 full time employees, and distribute $5,000,000.00 annually throughout the local economy. Now, just 4 months ago I borrowed $1,254,000.00, purchasing computer controlled machining equipment to start my 4th business, a production machine shop. The machine shop will serve the mud pump company so that we can better manufacture our pumps that are being shipped worldwide. Of course, the machine shop will also do work for outside companies as well. This has already produced 2 more full time jobs, and 2 more should develop out of it in the next few months. This should work out, but if it doesn't it will be because you, and the other professional politicians like yourself, will have destroyed our country's (and the world) economy with your meddling with mortgage loan programs through your liberal manipulation and intimidation of loaning institutions to make sure that unqualified borrowers could get mortgages. You see, at the very time when I couldn't get a business loan to get my mud pumps into production, you were working with Acorn and the Community Reinvestment Act programs to make sure that unqualified borrowers could buy homes with no down payment, and even no credit or worse yet, bad credit. Even the infamous, liberal, Ninja loans (No Income, No Job nor Assets). While these unqualified borrowers were enjoying unrealistically low interest rates, I was paying 22% to 24% interest on those credit cards that I had used to provide me the funds for the mud pump business that has created jobs for more East Texans. It's funny, because after 25 years of turning almost every dime of extra money back into my businesses to grow them, it has been only in the last two years that I have finally made enough money to be able to put a little away for retirement, and now the value of that has dropped 40% because of the policies you and your ilk have perpetrated on our country.

You see, Mr. Obama, I'm the guy you intend to raise taxes on. I'm the guy who has spent 25 years toiling and sweating, fretting and fighting, stressing and risking, to build a business and to get ahead. I'm the guy who has been on the very edge of bankruptcy more than a dozen times over the last 25 years, and all the while creating more and more jobs for East Texans who didn't want to take a risk, and wouldn't demand from themselves what I have demanded from myself. I'm the guy you characterize as 'the Americans who can afford it the most' that you believe should be taxed more to provide income redistribution 'to spread the wealth' to those who have never toiled, sweated, fretted, fought, stressed, or risked anything. You want to characterize me as someone who has enjoyed a life of privilege and who needs to pay a higher percentage of my income than those who have bought into your entitlement culture.

I resent you, Mr. Obama, as I resent all who want to use class warfare as a tool to advance their political careers. What's worse, each year more Americans buy into your liberal entitlement culture, and turn to the government for their hope of a better life instead of themselves. Liberals are succeeding through more than 40 years of collaborative effort between the predominant liberal media, and liberal indoctrination programs in the public school systems across our land.
What is so terribly sad about this is this. America was made great by people who embraced the one-time American culture of self reliance, self motivation, self determination, self discipline, personal betterment, hard work, risk taking. A culture built around the concept that success was in reach of every able bodied American who would strive for it. Each year that fewer Americans embrace that culture, we all descend together. We descend down the socialist path that has brought country after country ultimately to bitter and unremarkable states. If you and your liberal comrades in the media and school systems would spend half as much effort cultivating a culture of can-do across America as you do cultivating your entitlement culture, we could see Americans at large embracing the conviction that they can elevate themselves through personal betterment, personal achievement, and self reliance.

You see, when people embrace such ideals, they act on them. When people act on such ideals, they succeed. All of America could find herself elevating instead of deteriorating. But that would eliminate the need for liberal politicians, wouldn't it, Mr. Obama? The country would not need you if the country was convinced that problem solving was best left with individuals instead of the government. You and all your liberal comrades have got a vested interested in creating a dependent class in our country. It is the very business of liberals to create an ever expanding dependence on government. What's remarkable is that you, who have never produced a job in your life, are going to tax me to take more of my money and give it to people who wouldn't need my money if they would get off their entitlement mentality asses and apply themselves at work, demand more from themselves, and quit looking to liberal politicians to raise their station in life.
You see, I know because I've had them work for me before. Hundreds of them over these 25 years. People who simply will not show up to work on time. People who just will not work 5 days in a week, much less, 6 days. People always looking for a way to put less effort out. People who actually tell me that they would do more if I just would first pay them more. People who take off work to sit in government offices to apply to get free government handouts (gee, I wonder how things would have turned out for them if they had spent that time earning money and pleasing their employer?). You see, all of this comes from your entitlement mentality culture.

Oh, I know you will say I am uncompassionate. Sorry, Mr. Obama, wrong again. You see, I've seen what the average percentage of your income has been given to charities over the years of 2000 to 2004 (ignoring the years you started running for office - can you pronounce "politically motivated"), you averaged less than 1% annually. And your running mate, Joe Biden, averaged less than ¼% of his annual income in charitable contributions over the last 10 years. Like so many liberals, the two of you want to give to the needy, just as long as it is someone else's money you are giving to them. I won't say what I have given to charities over the last 25 years, but the percentage is several times more than you or Joe Biden (don't you just hate Google?). Tell me again how you feel my pain.

In short, Mr. Obama, your political philosophies represent everything that is wrong with our country. You represent the culture of government dependence instead of self reliance; Entitlement mentality instead of personal achievement; Penalization of the successful to reward the unmotivated; Political correctness instead of open mindedness and open debate. If you are successful, you may preside over the final transformation of America from being the greatest and most self-reliant culture on earth, to just another country of whiners and wimps, who sit around looking to the government to solve their problems. Like all of western Europe. All countries on the decline. All countries that, because of liberal socialistic mentalities, have a little less to offer mankind every year.

God help us...

Cory Miller
just an ordinary, extraordinary American, the way a lot of Americans used to be.

P.S. Yes, Mr. Obama, I am a real American...

OK. Nuff said. Now, let's pick up the pieces and define a strategy for 2012. Methinks we need to defeat the media and the whorenalists for starters. We also need a new Buckley, and not Christopher for heaven's sake. Ideas? C'mon people, cheer up!!!

THE CHOICE...

ADDITION Obama 2008 Photomccain

... should be obvious.

I am a Fleming.

I am a Belgian.

I am a European.

Everybody is biased to some point. I am no exception. I was born and raised in a conservative household in which both parents, who both had to work from a very young age to pay for the education of their younger siblings, did their utmost best, at great personal cost, to offer their four children better chances than they had had. It is only natural that their example was of great influence on me and my political leanings.

Had I been born in a dirt poor family wherein my father would have left my mother when I was still just a kid, my outlook on the world might have been very different. I might have believed (more) in redistribution.

I have never claimed the right has it always "right". I have never claimed, or even believed, that I myself, in presenting my conservative views to others, am 100% right. Neither however do I believe it's a 50/50 thing. What I DO believe is that the "Right" has got it "right" more often than the Left. I DO believe in hard work and eking out a comfortable living for yourself on this planet by your own efforts. I DO believe children who have had the fortune to grow up in a stable family wherein the father is a man and the mother a woman, preferably married, have a far better shot at becoming happy, sane and satisfied citizens than kids of single parents. I DO believe in the quintessential goodness of the faith I was brought up in, Christianity, even though I admit I have often been a doubter.

As I grow older, I notice ever more things that convince me of why it's better to be a rightwinger than a leftwinger. Last Saturday, All Saints Day, I put flowers on a little stone on my hometown's cemetery. An urn is buried under it. It contains the ashes of my good friend Wim V., who died at 27 from an overdose. In my country, possession of softdrugs has been legalized by the left. It was drugs which sent my friend on a path of despair from which there was no return. Wim was a leftwinger, I am a rightwinger. But it was me putting those flowers on that stone.

My private home is in Wallonia, my business in Flanders. As I thus travel daily between what is essentially an almost communist state in a state and a relatively capitalist region (socialism has alas also made great inroads in Flanders), I have daily evidence that socialism ruins a country and people while capitalism empowers them and makes them wealthy.

I have noticed that it was a leftist, Volkert Van Der Graaff, who murdered Pim Fortuyn, a brave Dutchman who lamented the insane mottos of the "multicultural" society.

I have also noticed that it was a muslim empowered by leftists, Mohammed Bouyeri, who murdered Theo Van Gogh, the Dutch filmmaker who did the same as Fortuyn.

I have noticed that in Europe, it's ALWAYS rightwing parties that are persecuted, NEVER leftwing parties.

And I have noticed that on the blogs, the sites where comment sections are closed for dissenting opinions, are almost always leftwing sites.

Today, the incomparable site Gates of Vienna broke the story of Frank Vanhecke, who only hours ago was stripped of his immunity as MEP (Member of the European Parliament). Mr. Vanhecke was THE man who turned my party, the Vlaams Belang, into a decent, modern conservative party of which William Buckley would have been proud. Several years ago, a VB member in a small Flemish town, Sint-Niklaas, distributed a leaflet in which he attributed the desecration of several graves to Moroccan youths. This later turned out to be untrue. The author publicly apologized; so did Mr. Vanhecke, since, as National Chairman, he was the responsible editor for all VB publications. Nevertheless, the extreme leftwing mayor of Sint-Niklaas, a socialist called Freddy Willockx, abused the incident to file a lawsuit for racism in the EP against... Mr. Vanhecke, who is one of three VB MEP's. And this despite a provision in Belgian law stipulating that if the author of the dubious publication admits guilt, which he did, the responsible editor can not be prosecuted anymore. You may remember the photo below, which shows Mr. Vanhecke after he was thrown on the ground and arrested in Brussels in September 2007 not for demonstrating against the islamization of Europe, since that had been forbidden by the socialist mayor of Brussels, but for merely chatting with reporters.

frankvanhecke

Hours ago, the verdict fell. The immunity of Frank Vanhecke has been lifted. He can now be prosecuted for racism for a publication he never wrote, nor was even aware of. Mr. Vanhecke will not be able to run in the 2009 European elections, and the VB loses in him a strong figure who would have brought in a substantial amount of votes. This is how the left neutralizes parties and people who refuse to swallow their enlightened wisdom.

This is what Europe, what the European Union, has become. Or is rapidly becoming. A totalitarian state.

And I notice that the dominant ideology in the European Union is leftist. To the degree that even the "rightwing" parties have adopted ominously much of the credos of the leftwing ones. I notice that Freddy Willockx is a leftwinger. I also notice that Frank Vanhecke is a rightwinger.

In the United States, I notice that Barack Hussein Obama is a leftwinger. I notice that Obama uses legal threats to pull a 527 ad. I notice that Obama threatens with lawsuits against Stanley Kurtz. I also notice that Obama throws reporters from newspapers who did not endorse him off his plane.

I notice that Barack Hussein Obama eerily strikes me as your typical Eurosocialist.

McCain is not perfect. McCain is not a perfect conservative. But still, if YOU, as an American and a citizen of the greatest nation on earth, cherish your freedom and cherish all the things that made your country what it is, a beacon of hope for billions - not the phoney delusional "hope" of a charlatan, but real hope for a better future in freedom - ... then your best chance lies with the Old Warhorse.

Don't say you haven't been warned.

TOP BELGIAN NEWSPAPER PRESENTS NUANCED VIEW OF AMERICA. CHAIRMAN OF EUROPEAN SOCIALIST PARTY POUL NYRUP RASMUSSEN ENDORSES OBAMA.

Belgium's leading newspaper is the Flemish daily De Standaard. Always eager to inform Belgium's dumb population with the latest news, fair and balanced, De Standaard presented its readers on Friday, October 31, with an extra issue solely dealing with America and the American way of life. Below is the ad from earlier this week highlighting the forthcoming of the extra issue:

fuckbush

The caption underneath the ad reads:

THE SUPERSIZED AMERICA JOURNAL FROM DE STANDAARD
Not to miss on Friday 31 October

America is more than the country of hamburgers, coke, Hollywood and George Bush. Do not judge too fast and discover the real America in the extra large America journal of De Standaard on Friday 31 October. Therein we give you a surprising and nuanced view on America, beyond the clichés. Life as it is in real in the states of America. In addition, you get a free Panos donut.
Follow America on its heels via www.standaard.be/vs2008

Notice the snippet "and nuanced view of America". I added two arrows. You can see for yourself how nuanced De Standaard's view of America is.

evitaneefsDespite the newspaper's claims that it brings you "nuanced" news, the only thing you'll find there is incessant, foaming-at-the-mouth tirades against everything Republican. It's not a recent thing: in 2004, De Standaard publicly endorsed John Kerry. I suspect very strongly that tomorrow morning, Monday 3 November, it will do the same for Barack Obama. In this campaign, possibly the most vicious, below-the-belt-attacks were reserved for Sarah Palin: literally nothing good has been said about her.. It should be noted that the Foreign Editor of De Standaard, Evita Neefs, is currently in the US covering the US elections. On De Standaard online, she regularly posts her impressions. Mrs. Neefs recently had the honour of being mentioned in a CBN broadcast, more precisely in "The 700 Club" during a conversation between Dale Hurd and Pat Robertson. Via Luc Van Braekel:

Dale Hurd: (...) De Standaard [meant is Evita Neefs, columnist in De Standaard - note by MFBB] in Belgium writes:

"American presidential elections are not home affairs. American decisions have repercussions all over the globe... Hence, the world should be given the right to vote." (...)

Alternative translation: "Those 60 million stupid American rednecks who keep voting the McBushitlers in the White House are a roadblock on humanity's path toward a socialist future and their votes must thus be annulled through the participation in the US elections of intelligent, enlightened progressive individuals like me."

Further evidence of De Standaard's nonpartisan character is offered by the ad hoc column, in Friday's America special, of Sarah Bettens, a Belgian popsinger of dubious fame who currently lives in Tennessee, of all places:

sbettens

Translation:

HELP, OUR NEW FRIENDS ARE PRO MCCAIN

Bad news, people: the couple we befriended over here in Johnson City and who fly over the ocean in a couple of weeks to see a concert of mine in my country of origin (and maybe also to see bit of Europe), is pro McCain! How could this happen? And that is not everything. Neither are they totally disgusted by that rightwing slut Sarah Palin, the biggest 'Jesus freak' walking in the political landscape. While registering and processing this ominous information, four options presented themselves in my mind. A first possibility is to completely evade the subject and pretend there's no presidential elections. If November 4 is mentioned, I excuse myself nonchalantly to go to the restrooms and linger there long enough until the conversation has switched to a lighter and less controversial subject.
Secondly, I could end our friendship abruptly and saddle my girlfriend [Sarah Bettens is lesbian - note from MFBB] with the ungrateful task to share a flight with people whom we don't talk to anymore.
Thirdly, I could bombard them the coming week with information and desperately try to convince them of why I am right. Those who know me somewhat, know that this is my favourite option.
Fourthly, I could try to look at the world from their POV and go search somewhere deep in me to some understanding for their vision. Those who know me somewhat, know that this is useless. But because option one to three are impossible, I will have to make an effort. Or at least pretend to, I'll get thru the week with that.

Notice for the umpteenth time how liberals are always dumbfounded when they discover that there are actually real people of flesh and blood who do not share their enlightened progressive opinions. While Miss Bettens says that option two, ending the friendship, is not feasible, I can testify that in my personal case, it was possible for a leftist friend of mine with whom I shared a student's home twenty years ago in Ghent. Four years back I encountered Paul K. again on the web. Despite our very good relationship back in the days, and my willingness to continue the friendship even upon discovering he had only radicalized in his leftist views, he abruptly ended our camaraderie when he found out about my activities on DowneastBlog. So much for the kind, tolerant and diverse leftist mindset, and Miss Bettens' pro McCain friends may very well find out she opted for no.2 after all. It won't be a great loss. Sarah Bettens biggest "hit" in the Low Countries was the song "I'm not an addict". Here's an exerpt from the lyrics:

Breathe it in and breathe it out
And pass it on, it's almost out
We're so creative, so much more
We're high above but on the floor

It's not a habit, it's cool, I feel alive
If you don't have it you're on the other side

The deeper you stick it in your vein
The deeper the thoughts, there's no more pain
I'm in heaven, I'm a god
I'm everywhere, I feel so hot

It's not a habit, it's cool, I feel alive
If you don't have it you're on the other side
I'm not an addict (maybe that's a lie)

It's over now, I'm cold, alone
I'm just a person on my own
Nothing means a thing to me
(Nothing means a thing to me)

Like I said, no great loss. Rather a win.

Oh yeah. You might to watch out for five Belgian clowns heading your way to monitor the US elections. It's just a matter of making sure Repimplicans don't steal them for a third time. Like De Standaard, the five pretend they are "nonpartisan". Still, Belgium's top blogger Luc Van Braekel found out something curious about two of them. From Luc's site:

"Five Belgian MP's left for the US as monitors for Tuesday's upcoming presidential elections. On account of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe they will check out whether the voting procedures are observed fair and correctly. It is however remarkable that two of the five are members of the support committee "Belgium for Obama" and can therefore hardly be called impartial."

Here is these bozo's website:

If you can stomach to venture into that site, you'll discover there's some peculiar Obama supporters over there. Take Elio Di Rupo e.g., Chairman of the Belgian Socialist Party, Wallonian branch. Here is what Mr. Di Rupo has to say about the great prospect of a Fellow Socialist at the helm of the US of A:

Just so that you know, the Wallonian Parti Socialiste, nicknamed the "Party of 1,000,000 scandals, is the main cause of Wallonia's dismal state. Wallonia has now been ruled for nearly a hundred years by this party, and it shows. It's an economic graveyard and can only be kept afloat by massive subsidies from Flanders, Belgium's rich north, channeled to it via the redistributionist network of the Belgian federal state. It should be noted that life expectancy in socialist dominated Wallonia is lower than in the more free market Flanders:

life_expectancy

Relative risks per region. Flanders, relatively free market, is roughly the top half of Belgium, socialist-dominated Wallonia the south half. The darker the region, the higher the health risks and the lower the life expectancy. ALL of the white areas are in Flanders. ALL of the dark areas are in Wallonia. Just so that you know what's in store for you when The One gives you the famous socialized health care system so many Americans are craving for. Here is more info from the NCBI PubMed site, a service from the US National Library of Medicine:

SETTING: As part of the WHO-MONICA study, acute coronary events have been registered from 1983 until 1992 in the general population aged 25-69 years in two Belgian cities--Ghent in the northern Dutch speaking part of Belgium and Charleroi in the southern French speaking part. Registration of events was done according to an international standard protocol. OBJECTIVE: To study trends in total, fatal and non-fatal event rates and trends in case fatality rates in these two cities. MAIN RESULTS: Incidence of CHD was on average 50% higher in Charleroi compared with Ghent in both men and women (attack rate ratio Charleroi/Ghent was 1.5 in both sexes). In both men and women, diverging trends were observed between the two cities for total and non-fatal event rates, while parallel declining trends were observed in fatal event rates and in case fatality rates. In both sexes, total attack rates showed a significant decrease in Ghent and a significant increase in Charleroi. Also in the two sexes, attack rates of non-fatal events increased significantly in Charleroi and remained stable in Ghent. Attack rates of fatal events decreased significantly in men and women in Ghent and in men in Charleroi. Both "total" and "in hospital" case fatality rates declined significantly in both sexes in the two cities. CONCLUSIONS: Important differences in coronary heart disease (CHD) incidence and CHD trends between Ghent and Charleroi were observed. These differences and trends are interpreted in the context of existing and still growing differences in the overall socioeconomic situation between the north and the south of the country. On the other hand, the efficacy of medical treatment of CHD is comparable in the two regions, as reflected by similar figures and trends for case fatality rates.

Crime-ridden and corrupt Charleroi, sometimes called the Chicago on the Sambre, has been a Parti Socialiste bulwark for over a century.

poulnyruprasmussenAre you still following? We're almost there. Apart from Mr. Di Rupo and a fair number of lesser socialist gods, you'll find on the roster of the Belgium for Obama Committee also a Dane. We're talking about Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, a Danish political heavyweight and former Danish PM, until the Danes, these days possibly the sanest Europeans, kicked him out in 2001 after he had sufficiently trashed their economy. Mr. Rasmussen, not related to the current Danish PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen, did not end up in the desert however. Far from. Currently he is President of the Party of European Socialists! It turns out that after Ayers, Dohrn, Rezko, Khalidi, Pfleger, Odinga and Di Rupo Mr. Obama can add yet another phone number of the "guy in his neighborhood" type to his Rolodex.

obama_night_mnIn Café Maison du Peuple, Parvis Saint-Gilles, 39 - 1060 Bruxelles, this Tuesday, November 4, the Wallonian Parti Socialiste organizes a "Soirée Obama Night"! Indeed, the Belgian Support Committee for Barack Obama, its president Elio Di Rupo and its co-president Marleen Temmerman will welcome you there for a grand evening of festivities in anticipation of a socialist in the White House, with direct election results on a big screen! Happy Hour from 20.30h till 22h30!

As a real American, you might want to trash that party.
