Throughout their career, which lasts to this day, The Cult has very much remained, well, a cult group. A UK postpunk and gothic rock band, their biggest hit was She sells sanctuary, from the 1985 album Love. In the late eighties they made their presence in the US known by evolving towards a more hardrock sound (album Electric, 1987). Since 1983, when they formed in Bradford, Yorkshire, till today, The Cult has had a veritable plethora of members. Singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy have remained constants though.
In 1995 London based dance group Definition of Sound had a commendable hit with Pass the Vibes.
